Moinho do Capitão
On April 5th, 2023, the land of the former factory was acquired by its current owner with the intention of repurposing part of the existing heritage for artistic use. The motivation behind the acquisition lies, in part, in the compelling relationship between the surrounding natural systems — the salt marshes, sand dunes and the river — each with its own intricacies and beauty, and the industrial heritage that has long been intertwined with the historical development of Seixal.
This site tells a layered story - social, economic, and historical — that unfolds in close connection with the rich and ever-changing ecosystem of the Tagus estuary. A complex, fragile, and often forgotten landscape that still carries immense potential for new meaning.
To inhabit a place today is to reinterpret it — to reconcile environmental, ecological, geological, historical, and social values with contemporary ways of living. It is within this delicate and rich intersection that the project finds its relevance and purpose.
